Onancock is a small town in Accomack County, Virginia, with a population of 1,263 as recorded in the 2010 census.
History
Onancock was established in 1680, according to a Virginia state highway marker. Shortly after its founding, a courthouse was built, and militia barracks were established during the American Revolution. In November 1782, Commodore Zedechiah Whaley sought aid from Onancock to combat British forces disrupting Chesapeake Bay. With the help of Lt. Colonel John Cropper and 25 local men, they engaged in what would become the Battle of Kedges Strait, the last naval battle of the American Revolution. The battle resulted in Whaley’s surrender on November 30, 1782, coinciding with the day the Treaty of Paris was drafted to formally end hostilities. However, the treaty wasn’t finalized until 1784.
The town is also near the home of Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise (1856–60). In the mid-1800s, Onancock served as a stop on the stagecoach route between Wilmington, Delaware, and Eastville, Virginia.
Several historical sites in Onancock are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Onancock Historic District, Cokesbury Church, Hopkins and Brother Store, and Ker Place.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Onancock covers a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.7 km²), all of which is land. The town sits at an elevation of 16 feet and is located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 census, Onancock had a population of 1,525, with a density of 1,452.3 people per square mile. The town’s racial composition was predominantly White (66.43%) and African American (31.41%), with smaller percentages of Native American, Asian, and other races. Around 2.89% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
There were 656 households, with 23.6% having children under 18. About 41.3% of households were married couples, while 40.1% were non-families. The average household size was 2.19, and the average family size was 2.82.
The population was spread across various age groups: 21.2% under 18, 26.3% aged 65 or older, and a median age of 45 years. The median household income was $28,214, and the median family income was $37,039, with 8.4% of families and 16.7% of the population living below the poverty line.
